So, according to Newsweek, Netflix and TiVo may begin collaborating. Yes, if the deal comes true, Netflix customers would be able to download rentals to their PVRs. Talk about sexy. If implemented properly (as usual, it’s the tiny details which will affect my opinion), they could yet again redefine my relationship with my TV. Goodness knows in the three years I’ve had TiVo and Netflix, I’ve completely changed what I watch, when I watch, and how I watch. And all for the better. I’d need a series two before any of this mattered to me personally, of course.

If Hollywood were smart (they’re not), they’d embrace TiVo’s downloading capability right now. Why? New. Revenue. Streams. If Netflix can do it, why can’t Warner Brothers? Imagine the Warners creating an Internet presence complete with a deep database of everything they’ve ever produced for TV. That’s right: Episodes on demand, for a reasonable monthly fee. There’s a whole lot of television (movies, too) which hasn’t seen DVD yet. And which may never. But if content owners got off their butts and put their stuff online, it would be a way to get people who want to see Il Sorpasso, or the episodes of Profit to shell out some dough. Yeah, that’d be a lot of gigs flying around. I know. Bug me with technicalities I care about. [via Boing Boing]
